151123 Sweetened Beverages

Ana Anguita (R3MFyC) with the help of Jonathan McFarland (English teacher) presented the topic "Consumption of Sugar Beverages and Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes". With reference to an interesting article that was published in the British Medical Journal.

Key Points:

1. Sugar juice and sweetened beverages increase the incidence of type II diabetes.
2. Further study is needed but the consumption of sugary drinks and obesity is related

151026 The Acute Abdominal Pain in Emergency Medicine

Milanka Krämer (R1 MFyC) presented the topic "acute abdominal pain in emergency medicine". With reference to a clinical case, she summarized how approach the image of abdominal pain.

Key points:

1. Acute abdominal pain: sudden, severe abdominal pain with more than 50 differential diagnoses is a systematic approach absolutely necessary.
2. Analgesics: the use of pain killers do not increase the risk for a wrong diagnosis. Treatment and should be applied if necessary.
3. Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm: we should maintain ploodpresure systolic 50-100 mmhm, limit fluid resuscitation to 500ml.

150922 Childhood Fever

Sergio Verd (pediatrician) and Pilar Salvá (R1 Internal Medicine) brough us up to date in the field of antibiotic use in children. His recommendations are based on systematic reviews an national guidelines

Keypoints:

1. Fever is not known to endanger a generally healthy child.
2. Defervescence does not distinguish infections and mask sintoms.
3. Fever reduces morbility and viral spreads.
4. No advantage in use of antipyretics in preventing convulsions.

Since June, Jonnathan McFarland  come to advise us on our English presentations, the first one was about Pressure Ulcer, by Raquel Muñoz (Primare Care Nurse) with Caterine Vicens (General Practitioner).
